Philosophical alternatives

Magazine cover design

Philosophical Alternatives is one of the most respected philosophical magazines in Bulgaria becasue of its long history and exceptional textual content. Despite that, their cover design was long outdated, and needed a redesign. The old one didn't catch the attention of anyone, who isn't into brutalism and cubism, which are not popular styles, in context of Bulgaria. Furthermore, it didn't have any necessary connection to the text, topic, or idea of the magazine.

painting

Pierre Saint-Paul
1998
CC BY-SA 4.0

This painting, by the late Saint-Paul combines in a very effective way the main pillars on which Phil. Alt. magazine is established - abstract and sophisticated ideas, and burrowing the reader in the deep hole of concept-exploration.

fonts and logo

The fonts used had to contrast with the painting, in order for the name of the magazine to stand out, thus we decided on easily readable sans fonts, which also contrast with the abstractness of the painting. Furthermore, the logo was not in line with recent developments of design, thus making it monchrome would both fit the new cover more and the new trends too, thus appealing to a new younger audience.
